Big Mountain Skiing
Beartooth Basin is not your typical ski area as both its terrain and operating season set it apart. Perched high along the Beartooth Highway near the Wyoming - Montana border at roughly 10,900 ft elevation, our summer-only ski area offers a raw and dramatic alpine skiing environment that’s steeped in adventure. We offer some of the best steep headwall and cornice skiing around. This summer we won’t be hosting any events, but plenty of great lines on the headwall! Don’t forget your helmet! Advanced intermediate/expert skills required.
Served by two high-speed platter lifts, Twin Lakes Headwall provides 600 Acres of skiing terrain that varies in pitch from 15 Degrees to 50 Degrees. (Steep!) Surrounding areas offer 3,000 vertical feet of shuttled or hike-in backcountry skiing and riding.
Natural and Man Made Big Air and Rails
One of Beartooth Basin’s most iconic characteristics is the natural big-air potential created by the Twin Lakes Headwall itself. Steep pitches, wind-sculpted rollovers, and strategically placed boulders form organic takeoffs and landings that allow skilled skiers and riders to find natural airs throughout the bowl. These aren’t manufactured shapes—they’re authentic alpine features that reward creativity, line choice, and confident big-mountain riding. On the right day, the headwall feels like a giant natural terrain park, with endless opportunities to boost off rock bands, lips, and wind features.
To complement this raw alpine environment, Beartooth Basin has added purpose-built jumps and rails in select zones, giving riders the option to mix freestyle progression into their big-mountain laps. These features provide consistent takeoffs, approachable sizes, and playful variety—perfect for dialing tricks, warming up, or adding style between headwall runs. The combination of massive natural airs and thoughtfully placed man-made features creates a unique hybrid experience: part big-mountain freeride zone, part summer terrain park.
Ski Racing & Freestyle Camps
A Deeply Rooted Racing & Skiing Legacy
Since opening in 1986, Beartooth Basin has built a reputation as one of North America’s most unique and authentic ski areas, born from a passion for preserving access to high-alpine summer skiing. Over the decades, it has welcomed generations of racers, freeriders, and adventurous skiers who view the Basin as a proving ground rather than a resort. Its raw, natural terrain, surface lifts, and community-driven spirit reflect a throwback era of skiing—where the focus is on snow, mountains, and progression. This blend of history, purpose, and challenging terrain makes Beartooth Basin not just a training venue, but a meaningful part of skiing culture and athlete development.
